Library window sign!
A while ago I got to design and make a pop-up sign for my library, for ... you got it, the pop-up books.  IT was great fun and pop-up books were found in their new location and checked out.
Meanwhile, in another part of the library, we have a stellar community outreach program called the Preschool Outreach Program. They send books out to daycare centers and preschools, sometimes with people and puppets to read them.
Renovations moved the pop-up books to an obvious spot and the 3-D sign was no longer needed. The head of the program above has a spectacular 3-D brain and recognized an acronym when she saw one. The POP sign had a new home.
Soon, thanks to a generous boss, I was able to make a large window sign for delightful head of POP, using the motif of the multicolored library checkout cards on the 3-D sign.  So much fun, and so lovely to have people happy with your work. Right?

Forts, Fruit Snacks, & Flying
Tumblr media
Summary: How will Natasha react when she sees the footage of your daughter’s high flying escapades with Peter while you two were in Paris celebrating your anniversary?
Pairings: Natasha x reader, Yelena, Kate, Peter x reader (platonic).
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 800
Warnings: None
A/N: @togrowoldinv suggested a fic where Natasha finds out about Mila’s flying with Peter in We’re a Family. This can also be read as a stand-alone story. I hope you enjoy it!
It was a bright and sunny Wednesday afternoon. You and Natasha have been home for almost two weeks; your unforgettable anniversary trip to Paris is still fresh in our minds. I had resumed my work routine, and even in her semi-retirement, Natasha had spent the last three days at the compound, dedicating her time to training a couple of new recruits.
As the meeting dragged on, you began to fret about picking up Mila from preschool. Aware that Nat wouldn't be available for another two hours, you decided to send a text to your sister-in-law.
You: Hey Yelena, I'm stuck at work. Nat is training recruits until 5 pm. Can you pick up Mila from preschool and bring her home? We should be home around 5:30 p.m.
Yelena: No problem! Peter, Kate Bishop, and I just finished an outreach event at the library. We’re only a couple blocks from her school.
You: Thank you! You’re the best sister-in-law ever. Tell Kate and Peter I say thank you as well. We’ll see you in a bit.
As Mila reached for her purple unicorn backpack tucked inside her designated cubby, she spotted Yelena, Kate, and Peter gathered near the doorway.
"Surprise, little spider! We're here to pick you up," Yelena exclaimed.
"Where's Mommy and Mama?" Mila asked as she hugged the trio.
“They’ll be home soon,” Yelena explained. “Meanwhile, we get to go home and play. What do you say?”
"Yay!" exclaimed the little girl.
*^~^*
After arriving home and giving Mila a snack, your daughter wanted to build a blanket fort. After some expert engineering, the four sat down inside the fort and enjoyed Welch’s Fruit Snacks.
Mila looked over at Peter, “Did you bring your flying suit with you?”
Oh, not today, sweetheart. I’m sorry,” Peter frowned.
Your little girl seems on the verge of tears when Kate interrupts. "Mila, do you want to see the video of you flying with Peter when you stayed with us? I have it on my phone."
She nods, and Kate tosses the video to the AirPlay on your big-screen TV. At that very moment, you and Natasha walked in the front door. Natasha’s eyes go wide as she takes in the 4K footage of your five-year-old daughter flying through the air on Spider-Man's back, while Mila runs up to hug you.
“What the hell?!” Natasha shouted.
“Mama said a bad word,” your daughter tattled, pointing at Nat.
“Yeah, sweetie, that was a bad word… Why don’t we go unpack your backpack?” you suggested as your little girl ran to you.
“Don’t kill him,” you said with a smirk and a hand on her shoulder as you walked by with Mila in your arms.
Natasha stares Peter down with a look that he’s only seen on missions. “Okay, I know what you’re thinking, Nat— Ms. Black Widow, Romanoff. But she was safe the entire time. I would never drop her. We put pillows down on the floor, and she had a blast,” Peter asserted.
“Peter, shut up,” Kate whispered.
“Good advice,” Nat remarked, taking a step toward Peter.
“Come on sestra, you know we did fun things like that all the time back in Ohio,” Yelena reasoned.
Nat is about to give it to Peter when she catches sight of her daughter’s face on the screen.
“Wee!! Faster, Uncle Peter!” Mila giggled.
Natasha's heart warmed at seeing her carefree and happy little girl, Mila, embodying everything she had hoped for her. Looking back at Peter, she maintained her best Black Widow poker face without missing a beat.
“I have two things to say to you. One—never do that again unless she is in mortal danger, or you will be the one in mortal danger. Two—can you send me that video?”
“I’m sorry, what?” Peter squirmed.
“Can you send me that video?” Natasha repeated. “I want it for her baby book.”
A look of relief washes over Peter’s face. “Oh, sure. Umm, Kate has it.” Peter said, pointing at the young archer.
Kate nodded and sent Nat the video, her phone pinging in confirmation.
“Thanks, and thank you for picking up Mila today. Would you three like to stay for dinner?”
“Sure, that would be great,” Yelena replied.
Nat walked away, leaving the three young Avengers standing in the living room.
“Dude, you’re sweating,” Kate giggled.
“You don’t need to be afraid of her. She isn’t as scary as she looks,” Yelena said.
“Really?” Peter said, with a raised eyebrow.
“No, she could kill you in two seconds. But look on the bright side, she didn’t. That means she likes you!” Yelena said, patting Peter on the back.
“Awesome,” Peter squeaked.

Talking on the phone with my mom I finally broke down and cried thoroughly about the cancellation. I think I'd been holding it in for the last two days, or two months. And honestly I've been wondering all along why this show means so much to me. I am not queer, I am not neurodivergent, I am not POC or disabled or any of the groups that this show has been so important for in terms of representation and being treated with respect and dignity. I understand and completely empathize with all of you, and fight for this show and your rights worldwide alongside you, but it still left me wondering why I myself have latched onto Our Flag Means Death. I suppose part of it is that despite being white and cishet and the privileges that have always come with that, I have been treated like an outsider and ostracized my entire childhood and teenage years, for being ugly and having "disgusting" interests (primarily liking insects, reptiles, other creepy-crawlies - aka the thing I literally do for my career now). I was bullied relentlessly from preschool through early college and became a very lonely introverted person - I still am. Undoubtedly Our Flag Means Death gave me renewed hope that I haven't missed some key window for finding love or relationships of any kind that matter, as I sit here typing this at age 28 having never dated anyone.
But it had to be more than that. And with everything that's happened the past couple of months, and the last few days, I think it finally clicked for me.
Followers of my blog may or may not know that I am a conservation biologist, or pollinator ecologist, whichever hat fits best on a given day, they're quite close. I don't make many original posts like this anymore on here because my job is so busy. Basically, I do a variety of things - academic research, habitat management & restoration, and public outreach - to try and preserve biodiversity and ecosystems on our planet. I'm just going to say it: it's a thankless job. Nothing we do ever feels like it's enough, and burnout is common in our field because we sit with the guilt of feeling like we are the only thing between survival and utter destruction of planet Earth, and work ourselves to exhaustion. It's one of those jobs where your work is your life, and your passion is your work, and it's inseparable from who you are on a molecular level. We are often faced, on a large scale, with hostility, from people that don't believe in science and are more than happy to pull a shotgun on us, or rich old men in power who are content to watch the world burn for another penny in their bank account. There are days when sometimes it sinks in just how bad things are, and it's terrifying, and I feel like we will never be able to do enough, to change enough, before it gets catastrophic. It's paralyzing.
My ability to do my job is dependent on hope. Unwavering, unrelenting hope. Hope beyond hope. We have to believe what we're doing matters, otherwise we'd fall down and never get back up again. I'm no big-shot, I give talks to a few hundred people at a time, and make urban pollinator habitat on a local scale. Is any of that going to make a difference compared to the ramifications of a single oil mogul deciding to cut corners and cause an oil spill that kills millions of seabirds and damages ocean food chains for decades to come? If people in my field let thoughts like that linger, we'd be paralyzed to inaction. I have to hope that the people I teach choose to do something good with that knowledge, and go on to inspire others, or that the patch of habitat I make allows a declining species to maintain a foothold instead of going locally extinct. You just have to keep going.
And Our Flag Means Death got wrapped up in that for me. The Stede Bonnet effect, if you will. He set out to do pirating differently, treating his crew with respect and helping them grow. In return, they internalized that mindset, and it spread to how they interacted with others. It changed the trajectory of individual lives, and also at least began to change how the society of pirates operated as a whole. It was a beacon of hope that choosing small acts of kindness did matter, even if you yourself could not see the ripples it made. It renewed my faith that love persevered and would win. That we could all make life a little better for each other and ourselves through kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and mutual support. I think a good chunk of that is from Taika - these are running themes in his projects, and his films move me deeply for that. This show became in some, perhaps subconscious way, a source of strength for me to keep putting myself out there in my line of work to do whatever I was capable of to help the cause.
The cancellation was devastating, but the second cancellation (turbohell cancelation?) was even more so. Because now it's so clear that this is largely the work of David Zaslav and the regime he's built. It's petty, it's greedy, and more than anything, it's cruel. Indifferently, indiscriminately cruel, when one person at the top can have such power to make or break the lives of thousands, millions, beneath them, and though it would have been barely a drop in the bucket, a hand wave, to renew our show or let it pass to another streamer, he actively chose to shackle it to this sinking Titanic of a company WBD has become. I have always operated on the belief that you can do anything if you work hard enough at it, and believed deep down that there was some order, some justice in the universe, atheist though I be. We as a fandom did everything we possibly could, we loved this show harder than anything. The numbers were there, the awards nominations were there, the critic praise was there, and we were loud and loyal every single day. I felt like we could do this - how could we not win when we've done so much, and the show deserves it so much? Surely cause and effect will prevail.
This fight seemed small, though really it wasn't; we fought for the right of artists and creators to make quality, original stories and have them told to their natural end, we fought for diversity representation to be more than a token character - OFMD raised the bar so much higher on all fronts, we fought to shed light on the chaos and impending collapse of this industry silencing art and exploiting writers, actors, and all manner of production workers. It was a small fight from the outside, one that I really felt we could win. And I put my heart and soul into it, because if we could win this, if we could save this simple, kind love story about two guys on a boat, then maybe there was hope for the bigger, badder stuff too. It shouldn't seem an insurmountable task for several thousand fans to convince a streaming service that they'd turn a tidy profit to give our show one more season.
Yet we lost - through no fault of our own. I am so proud of us. But that really struck deep for me. If one peabrained CEO of a media company wouldn't budge on greenlighting a show that was in his every best interest business-wise - perhaps enough to even save Max from going under in the not-too-distant future - my god, what hope was there for changing anything bigger? The 'real' problems of the world? When no amount of ethos, logos, or pathos can penetrate these men at the top, where's that hope to fight? Lately the world seems like it's just going belly up all over. If we gave everything we could, and it still wasn't enough - if it could never be enough - what hope is there? It's like chaining yourself to a tree and the bulldozer plowing right on ahead. And I think that broke something in me. It shook me to my foundations because it broke my rules of how things are supposed to work. We believed hard enough, we worked tirelessly, and we deserved it for how important this show was to so many people. And it didn't matter. Our best wasn't enough. And that caused an avalanche of all of the horrible, scary things piled on my shoulders - we're losing the Amazon rainforest too fast to save, climate change is going to turn the corn belt into a dustbowl by mid-century, a border wall is going to devastate imperiled wildlife in Texas, deforestation and hurricanes on songbird wintering grounds could lead to entire species extinctions, saltmarshes are our lifeline and they're shrinking and we're still building stupid concrete stormwalls, invasive diseases will completely alter the composition of our forests to be unrecognizable to our children, and if you don't make every slide of this powerpoint utterly perfect and you fail to convince every single person in attendance to get rid of their lawn then you've failed and the world is doomed.
I've struggled with being a perfectionist my whole life. This didn't help.
That's where I was a couple hours ago. But I took some deep breaths. I know the world isn't fair. But I really thought if we could win this one battle, then we could win the war.
But here's what I realized. Everything we did mattered. It mattered so much. Because there's the show, and then there's everything that was birthed out of that show. The community, so many of us around the world who have been uplifted by Our Flag Means Death in a real and lasting way that we will take with us and spread to affect those around us. The Stede Bonnet effect goes global. We raised thousands and thousands of dollars for charities around the world, real people whose lives have been improved, or maybe even saved, because of us and this silly pirate show. We brought a hell of a lot of attention to WBD and their shitty practices, keeping the momentum going in a way that I think is only going to build - and I sure hope it leads to Zaslav getting deposed. We have demanded more queer stories, more BIPOC stories, more disabled and autistic and middle-aged stories, stories with exquisite costumes and award-worthy wigs, dear lord, and we are being heard. We have expressed such love and support for the cast and crew, showing them that we appreciate their hard work and that we will be behind them in their future projects. So many of them have told us how the show and its fans have changed their lives. We convinced Rhys that his career isn't winding down but winding up, and to be unapologetic about his wonderful weirdness - we've proven to everyone through this show that your weirdness is what someone out there is going to love you for, not in spite of. We rallied to help writers and actors during the strikes in a way that was taken to heart and remembered. We have been out here talking it through as a crew, and turning poison into positivity, for over two years now, and that impact is permanent. They can cancel our show, they can try and slap copyright notices on our fan merch, and spew bullshit excuses about the numbers not being there. But Our Flag Means Death sparked a movement, the biggest pirate crew the world has ever seen, using our power for good.
We may not have any more new material for our show for a while, or ever. But I maintain hope that when the dust has settled and streaming has entered its 'new era' that they'll remember us and throw us a lifeline. Because hope is a part of my genetic makeup, and even in cancellation my hope has been renewed that the fight is worth fighting, that our individual choices of kindness are having an effect, and making the world a little easier to live in bit by bit. No one can take from us what we have built out of this show. And thanks to pirating, they can't take the actual show from us either. Despite this, no matter the outcome, I am so happy we got two seasons of this wonderful series. That was more than almost anyone expected. The story belongs to all of us, and it will always live on. We did not truly lose this battle, because in the process we gained more than we could have ever imagined. And I know there's still so much more to come. That gives me the strength to keep doing what I do, every day.
To me, Our Flag Means Hope.

Hello!
I was wondering, how does working in a library looks like? Is it fun? What responsibilities are there? Would you mind telling about it?
Tumblr media
YES I want to talk about the library!! Always and any time!! Ask me any library questions and I will be excited to answer them!!
I will say that any experience in any library will depend on what role you were hired to fill. I would have a vastly different experience if I was hired to work in a college library with students, or in a medical library with student doctors, or in a law library, or in a private library or in an archive...There are lots of roles librarians fill, and each one is unique!
I, however, took every child psychology class my undergrad would let me, and now I work with the tiny babies! 🥰❤ (And the medium babies, and the preschoolers, and the kindergartners...)
I work in a public library, which means we serve a certain geographical area, and I work with a certain age group, which happens to be birth through K ages, which means that my role is to support the reading habits, language acquisition skills, and local educational efforts in town and in our school district for all the kids who fit that age group. Therefore, my responsibilities are to:
Manage the collection! This means that I make sure we're getting hot new kids books in, [especially kids books with huge educational value (ask me about how we judge this sometime)], that all the gross old busted books are tossed summarily, and that they fit our library's mission statement. Since I work with the little kids, I manage the Picture Book section, the Board Book section, the Early Reader section, the read-along books (CD books or chip-reading books), and sometimes the audiobooks and the kid tablets. I also have to know about the chapter books, graphic novels, nonfiction books, and tween/teen books, since kids will ask me about them at the youth services desk, but I don't manage those collections.
Provide programming! Librarians usually have a specialty in...something. Everyone finds their niche. It's guaranteed. This may be because most librarians are secretly neurodivergent but also because it's great to be good at something and have people learn to expect it. Some people are great at research in certain topics or know a lot about local resources or can lead certain craft programs that may be specialty only. Since I work with babies, My role is to provide a lot of storytime programs, age-appropriate craft programs, and help facilitate outside performers in the library to provide educational things I can't. (Ex. I don't know sign language, so I can't do sign language storytime. We hire someone to to this for us since it's not an easy thing to branch out.)
Perform outreach! Outreach is what it's called when the librarian shows up at your school and says "you know we have sonic comics, right?" And kids are like 'YOU HAVE SONIC??' And we're like, 'yeah, we have Dogman too'. Outreach can take many forms— Adult Services librarians might head to a community home or the food pantry or nursing homes to check out books and make library cards, but Youth Services librarians usually go to community centers, parks, and most importantly, schools! This is so that we can preach the good word of library cards to kids at an age where they can learn the values of never paying for books but still being voracious readers. Want a million books at home? Check out ten at a time, and you'll hardly ever run dry!
Now...is it fun?
I mean. I think so? I love my job; I get to see babies every day, I get to recommend the books I read as kids to kids now, and give them the hot new books when they need something more modern; I get to tell moms to stop being so weird about their kids' reading habits and just let them read comics, no, really, it has a massive impact on their willingness to fall in love with reading; I get to tell kids that they can get to pick out their own sticker if they clean up the toys when they're done playing (HUGE for them); I was trained to sing since I was yea high, and I love picture books as an art form, so planning storytimes is super fun and exciting for me! On the other hand, I'm basically performing half hour mini-shows once a week— or maybe even multiple times a week on outreach weeks— and have to have them scheduled months and months in advance before they're actually designed, and each one is new and untested. Every week. The performance anxiety can be unreal, even when I love what I'm doing. I love gossip, but I actually get overstimulated in rooms with a lot of active people for a long time, so some on-desk days can be stressful. People will harass you about changes upper admin make, but you're the one on the desk, do you're the one they yell at. My coworkers are all amazing and I love them, and that's pretty lucky, haha. The kids who see me come to their school ALL come up to me to tell me I visited ("I know, I was there! What book did you like the most?") and ask after the books and resources I showed them while I was there. I show them books and things from my childhood, things that are about to disappear. We sing songs older than some of the parents are and songs released last year. All things are give and take.
And sometimes on empty desk shifts, I write fanfic. So. ✨👍🏽📚
I would say that if you're interested in libraries, volunteer at your local one. A lot of things librarians will tell you about will sort of get washed aside when we try to infodump everything to you when you get your card. I'll be like "WE HAVE FREE WIFI HOTSPOTS AND MUSEUM PASSES" and people will be cleaning out their ears like "huh? What'd you say? Whatever." Volunteering is a great way to get out on the floor and get to know all the services public libraries offer. I got a two year degree in two years of working part-time and full-time, and now I make construction paper crafts for kids! I needed a Masters degree for that! Whack. Anyway being a librarian is like doing whatever you want and giving out freebies all at the same time, as long as you also do your homework and make sure your large collection of books is nice and clean and functional.
Also. Weed out all the racist books. "What but racist book #2 was my favorite! :(" Don't care. I work with early childhood education and baby books. If a kid sees that, their self esteem could be harmed irrevocably. Dump it.
Other roles in public libraries are different: you could work in circulation, collection development, marketing, tech services, adult services... But this is what I do! 💜📚💜

Preschool Franchise Cost: What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
Starting a preschool franchise can be rewarding, especially when you have a vision for shaping future leaders. At Makoons Preschool, we foster the skills, knowledge, and values necessary for children to thrive in the 21st century. Understanding the preschool franchise cost is crucial for making informed decisions as you consider this venture. This blog post will explore the various components of preschool franchise costs, what to expect, and how our school’s unique philosophy can guide your journey.
The Growing Demand for Preschool Education
The increasing awareness among parents regarding the importance of early childhood education has led to a growing demand for quality preschool programs. This trend has made preschool franchising a popular choice for entrepreneurs looking to impact their communities positively. At Makoons Preschool, we envision today’s children as tomorrow’s leadership icons, which motivates our commitment to a child-centric learning environment that nurtures each child's unique potential.
Factors Influencing Preschool Franchise Cost
Several key factors come into play when considering the costs involved in starting a preschool franchise. Understanding these components can help you plan effectively and ensure a successful launch.
Franchise Fees
The initial franchise fee is one of the primary expenses when starting a preschool franchise. This fee varies widely based on the brand’s reputation and support systems. Typically, franchise fees range from $20,000 to $50,000, but established brands may charge more than $100,000. This fee provides access to valuable resources, training programs, and ongoing support. At Makoons Preschool, our strong brand presence and comprehensive support for franchisees can help mitigate some initial costs.
Location Costs
Choosing the right location for your preschool is essential for attracting families. Rental or purchase costs for a suitable space can be one of your most significant investments. Costs depend on the local real estate market, size, and proximity to residential areas. Depending on the chosen location, setting up a preschool may range from $100,000 to $500,000. Our Makoons Preschool facilities are designed to create inviting and accessible environments that promote learning and engagement.
Renovation and Equipment
Transforming a space into a nurturing learning environment requires investment in renovations and equipment. This includes purchasing age-appropriate furniture, educational materials, and safety equipment. Renovation costs can vary from $20,000 to $150,000, while necessary equipment might add another $10,000 to $50,000 to your budget. At Makoons Preschool, we prioritize creating a vibrant, engaging atmosphere supporting our child-centric philosophy.
Operational Costs
Ongoing operational costs are another important aspect to consider. This includes staff salaries, utilities, insurance, supplies, and marketing expenses. Hiring qualified educators is essential, and operational costs can range from $30,000 to $200,000 annually, depending on the size of your preschool. Makoons Preschool invests in skilled educators who foster creativity and leadership skills, ensuring that our students receive the highest quality of education.
Marketing and Promotion
Building brand awareness is critical for attracting families to your preschool. Initial marketing expenses can range from $5,000 to $20,000 and may cover online promotions, local advertising, and community events. Establishing a strong presence in your community is essential for filling your classrooms and achieving long-term success. At Makoons Preschool, we engage in community outreach and showcase our unique approach to early childhood education to effectively market our brand.
Financing Your Preschool Franchise
With the potential costs of launching a preschool franchise, exploring various financing options is important. Here are some common avenues to consider:
Personal Savings: Many entrepreneurs use personal savings to fund their preschool franchise, allowing them to retain full control over their investments.
Small Business Loans: Various banks and credit unions offer loans specifically for small businesses. Research options to find favorable interest rates and terms that fit your budget.
Franchise Financing Programs: Some franchisors, including Makoons Preschool, may offer financing options to help franchisees cover startup costs, including franchise fees, equipment purchases, and marketing expenses.
Grants and Incentives: Depending on your location, you may qualify for grants or incentives to promote early childhood education. Research local and federal programs that support educational initiatives.
Understanding the Return on Investment (ROI)
While the initial costs may seem significant, investing in a preschool franchise can yield substantial returns. The early childhood education market is expected to grow, driven by increasing awareness among parents about its importance. A well-managed preschool can achieve profitability within a few years, making it a financially rewarding venture.
Additionally, the emotional rewards of shaping young minds and contributing to their development are invaluable. At Makoons Preschool, we focus on nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and leadership skills in our students, aligning with our vision of creating future leaders.
Conclusion
Understanding preschool franchise costs is essential for anyone considering this fulfilling venture. From initial franchise fees and location costs to ongoing operational expenses, a comprehensive understanding of the financial landscape will empower you to make informed decisions.
Investing in a preschool franchise offers the potential for financial success and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of young children. Community Engagement And Yang Fan Academy’s Preschool In Pleasanton
Tumblr media
Preschool education is not just about what happens within the four walls of a classroom; it’s about being part of a larger community that supports the growth and development of young children. At Yang Fan Academy’s preschool in Pleasanton, community engagement is not just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental aspect of the educational experience. Let’s explore the importance of community engagement and how it enriches the preschool journey for both children and their families.
Building Strong Foundations- Community engagement begins with building strong foundations, and that starts with relationships. Yang Fan Academy believes that the community, including parents, teachers, and local organizations, should work together as a cohesive unit to support children’s learning. This collaborative approach sets the stage for a positive and nurturing educational environment.
At the heart of our community engagement efforts is the belief that a strong partnership between parents and educators is essential. We actively involve parents in their child’s educational journey, recognizing them as valuable contributors to the learning process. Through regular communication, meetings, and involvement in school activities, parents become active participants in their child’s education.
In addition to parent engagement, we extend our outreach to local organizations and the broader community. We collaborate with community resources, inviting guest speakers, organizing educational events, and participating in community service projects. These interactions expose children to diverse experiences and perspectives, enriching their understanding of the world around them.
Parents As Partners- Parents play a pivotal role in a child’s early education journey. Yang Fan Academy recognizes the importance of parental involvement and actively encourages parents to be partners in their child’s preschool experience. We understand that the collaboration between parents and educators is essential for a child’s holistic development.
Regular communication is a cornerstone of our approach. We maintain open and transparent lines of communication with parents through newsletters, emails, and meetings. This ensures that parents are well-informed about their child’s progress, activities, and any important updates from the school.
Parent-teacher conferences are another integral part of our parent engagement strategy. These conferences provide dedicated time for parents and teachers to discuss a child’s academic and social development. It’s an opportunity to share insights, set goals, and address any questions or concerns that parents may have. These meetings strengthen the partnership between parents and educators, fostering a shared commitment to a child’s success.
Beyond formal meetings, we encourage parents to actively participate in school activities and events. Whether it’s attending parent-teacher association meetings, their classes, volunteering for school projects, or joining in on field trips, parents have numerous opportunities to be directly involved in their child’s educational experience.
Tumblr media
A Sense Of Belonging- Belonging to a community is a fundamental human need, and it holds significant importance for young children. At Yang Fan Academy, we understand the profound impact that a sense of belonging can have on a child’s development. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming community where every child feels valued, accepted, and a sense of belonging.
One of the primary ways we foster a sense of belonging is by emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and diversity. Our preschool environment is intentionally designed to reflect the diverse backgrounds, abilities, and cultures of our students and their families. We celebrate this diversity and use it as an opportunity to teach children about the richness of different perspectives and experiences.
In our classrooms and daily activities, we promote inclusivity through various means. Children are encouraged to engage in collaborative projects that highlight the value of teamwork and cooperation. We incorporate diverse books, materials, and learning experiences that represent a wide range of cultures and perspectives. By doing so, we create an environment where children can see themselves reflected in their learning environment and also learn about the world beyond their immediate experiences.
Cultural Awareness And Diversity- In our ever-globalizing world, cultural awareness and diversity have become increasingly important. At Yang Fan Academy, we recognize the significance of exposing young children to diverse cultures and backgrounds. Through community engagement, we aim to provide meaningful opportunities for children to learn about different traditions, languages, and customs, ultimately fostering cultural awareness and promoting inclusivity.
Our approach to cultural and language awareness and diversity begins with the belief that every child should have the chance to explore and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our global community. To achieve this, we implement several strategies:
Cultural Celebrations: Throughout the year, we organize cultural celebrations and events that highlight various cultural traditions. These celebrations offer children a chance to learn about different holidays, festivals, and customs through hands-on experiences. Whether it’s Diwali, Chinese New Year, or Eid, our students have the opportunity to participate in activities that immerse them in the cultures being celebrated.
Global Awareness: Through age-appropriate discussions, stories, and projects, we introduce children to global issues and concepts like environmental stewardship, fairness, and kindness. We emphasize the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of being responsible global citizens.
Inclusive Curriculum: Our curriculum is designed to include diverse perspectives and experiences. We incorporate books, materials, and activities that reflect the cultural diversity of our student body. This ensures that children see themselves represented and learn about cultures different from their own.
Respect and Empathy: We prioritize teaching children values of respect and empathy. Through discussions and activities, children learn to appreciate and embrace differences. We create an environment where asking questions and expressing curiosity about other cultures is encouraged.
Local Resources And Expertise- At Yang Fan Academy, we believe that communities are invaluable sources of knowledge, resources, and expertise. We actively seek to leverage these local assets to enhance the preschool experience and provide our students with a well-rounded education. Our approach involves creating meaningful connections between our school and the community, making the community an extension of our classroom.
Here’s how we harness local resources and expertise to enrich the learning journey of our young students:
Field Trips: We organize field trips to nearby attractions and resources, such as museums, parks, farms, and nature reserves. These trips allow children to explore and learn in different environments while gaining a deeper understanding of their local community. Field trips are carefully designed to align with our curriculum and learning objectives.
Local Culture and History: We explore the cultural and historical aspects of our community through storytelling, visits to local landmarks, and interactions with community members. Learning about the history and heritage of their surroundings helps children develop a sense of place and belonging.
Environmental Education: Collaborating with local environmental organizations and experts, we introduce children to the wonders of nature. Nature walks, visits to botanical gardens, and discussions about local ecosystems foster a love for the environment and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.
Service Learning- At Yang Fan Academy, we believe that service learning is a powerful tool for instilling values of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility in young children. Our approach to service learning for kindergarten and preschoolers is rooted in the belief that even the youngest members of our community can make a positive impact and learn valuable life lessons through acts of kindness and service.
Here’s how we incorporate service learning into our preschool program:
Acts of Kindness: We start by teaching children about kindness and empathy through everyday interactions. Simple acts of kindness, such as helping a friend, sharing toys, or saying kind words, are encouraged and celebrated. These acts form the foundation of empathy and caring for others.
Storytelling and Discussions: We use storytelling and age-appropriate discussions to help children understand the concept of service and why it’s important. We read books and share stories that highlight acts of kindness and the difference they can make in the lives of others.
Reflection and Discussion: After participating in service activities, children engage in reflection and discussion. We ask questions like, “How did it feel to help others?” and “What did you learn from this experience?” These discussions encourage children to think about the impact of their actions and the value of empathy.
Building a Culture of Giving: Our goal is to build a culture of giving and social responsibility within our preschool. By starting early, we aim to instill lifelong values of empathy and service in our students.
Tumblr media
Community Events And Celebrations- At Yang Fan Academy, we understand the significance of coming together as a community to celebrate shared experiences and create lasting memories. Our commitment to community engagement extends to organizing a variety of events and celebrations that unite families, educators, and children in joyful and meaningful ways. These events serve as a vital component of our preschool experience, fostering connections, promoting social interaction, and strengthening the bonds within our community.
Here are some examples of the key aspects of our community events and celebrations:
Diverse Celebrations: We celebrate a diverse range of events and cultural holidays to ensure that all members of our community feel included and valued. From traditional festivals to cultural celebrations, we embrace the rich tapestry of backgrounds and traditions that make up our community.
Family Involvement: Our community events are designed to actively involve families. Parents, grandparents, and siblings are encouraged to participate, creating a sense of unity and shared experiences. These events provide opportunities for families to spend quality time together.
Fostering Friendships: Community events are an excellent platform for children to form friendships and socialize with their peers. These interactions contribute to the development of social skills, empathy, and a sense of belonging.
Promoting Creativity: Many of our events involve creative activities such as art projects, performances, and crafts. These activities allow children to express themselves and showcase their creativity while having fun.
Creating Lasting Memories: We believe that the memories created during these events stay with children throughout their lives. Positive experiences at our community celebrations can shape their perception of school, learning, and community engagement.
Lifelong Connections : Preschool Pleasanton- At Yang Fan Academy’s preschool in the city of Pleasanton, we recognize that the bonds formed through community engagement extend well beyond the preschool years. Our commitment to fostering a strong sense of community creates connections that have a lasting impact on both families and children.
Here’s how community engagement at our various preschools leads to lifelong connections:
Parental Friendships: Parents who participate in our community events and engage with other families often form deep and lasting friendships. These connections are built on shared experiences, common goals, and the shared journey of parenting. Many of these friendships continue to grow and provide a support system for parents long after their children have moved on to higher grades.
Children’s Friendships: For children, the friendships formed during their preschool years can be the foundation for lifelong connections. Early friendships often become enduring ones as children progress through their educational journey together. These friendships can offer social support, companionship, and a sense of belonging throughout their school years and beyond.
Support System: The connections made within our preschool community serve as a support system for families. Parents can rely on each other for advice, assistance, and a sense of camaraderie. Whether it’s arranging playdates, carpooling, or simply lending a listening ear, these connections offer practical and emotional support.
Shared Milestones: Families who have connected through our preschool often celebrate important milestones together, such as graduations, birthdays, and achievements. These shared moments create cherished memories and deepen the sense of belonging to a close-knit community.
Social and Emotional Well-Being: Lifelong connections contribute to the social and emotional well-being of both parents and children. Knowing that there is a supportive community to turn to in times of need fosters a sense of security and resilience.
A Foundation For Future Engagement- Yang Fan Academy believes that fostering a sense of community at the preschool level lays the foundation for future community engagement. As children grow and move on to primary school and beyond, they carry with them the values of collaboration, inclusivity, and social responsibility learned during their preschool years.
In conclusion, community engagement is not an add-on but an integral part of the preschool experience at Yang Fan Academy in Pleasanton. It builds strong foundations, encourages parental involvement, creates a sense of belonging, promotes cultural awareness, leverages local resources, teaches service learning, celebrates together, and forms lifelong connections. By actively engaging with the community, Yang Fan Academy enriches the preschool journey for both children and their families, preparing them not only for academic success but also for a future of active and responsible citizenship.

Effective Digital Marketing Tactics for Preschools
Tumblr media
In today's digital-first world, savvy digital marketing is indispensable for preschools seeking to attract new enrollments and engage with parents. Integrating social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and content marketing into your overall marketing strategy for preschool can significantly amplify its visibility and appeal. Let's delve into these components and explore how they comprise a formidable preschool advertising playbook.
Embracing Social Media for Outreach and Connection
Social media is an excellent platform for building relationships with current and prospective families. It provides a space for you to share success stories, events, and showcase the day-to-day happenings within your classrooms.
Facebook: With a vast user base, Facebook offers various tools like pages, groups, and targeted ads that can be used to engage with parents. Regular posts featuring students' activities, holidays, and educational content can create a lively and informative page that invites interaction.
Instagram: This visually oriented platform is perfect for sharing moments from your preschool in a more intimate, immersive format. Think classroom snapshots, art projects, and school events that capture the vibrancy of your preschool's culture.
Utilizing both organic and paid opportunities on these platforms can improve your school's visibility and foster a sense of community around your brand.
Harnessing the Power of SEO
SEO is a cornerstone of any digital marketing strategy, and for preschools, it's no different. By optimizing your website and content for relevant keywords (e.g., "preschools near me," "early childhood education"), you can climb the search engine rankings and increase your chances of being found by parents researching their options.
Use local keywords specific to your area.
Maintain an active blog covering topics relevant to early childhood education and parenting.
Ensure your site is mobile-friendly, as many parents will be doing their searches from mobile devices.
Creating Valuable Content
Content marketing can position your preschool as a thought leader in early childhood education. By creating valuable, engaging content, you can attract and retain the attention of prospective families.
Blog Posts: Share insights on child development, fun learning activities, or tips for parents. This not only assists with SEO but also establishes your credibility and value to parents.
Email Newsletters: Regular newsletters can keep your preschool top-of-mind for parents and create a channel for direct communication.
Video Content and Virtual Tours
Video content is a dynamic way to share your preschool's story. Videos of children engaging in activities, testimonials from parents, and words from the staff help to build a trustworthy and empathetic presence.
Virtual Tours: Offer parents a glimpse into the environment where their children will learn and play, especially critical during times when in-person tours might not be possible.
Live Q&A Sessions: Engage with parents directly by hosting live sessions on social media where they can ask questions about your curriculum, philosophy, and more.
Google Ads and Online Enrollment
Google Ads can put your preschool in front of parents at the very moment they are searching for early education options. With targeted ads, you can reach individuals based on their location, search history, and more, ensuring relevance and timeliness.
Streamlining the enrollment process by offering online forms and tours can help convert interest into action. Make sure these processes are user-friendly and accessible from both desktop and mobile devices.
Conclusion
Digital marketing presents a multitude of adaptive, effective tools for preschool advertising. By leveraging social media, SEO, and content marketing, you can enhance your preschool's digital presence, making it easier for families to find and connect with you. Coupling these efforts with video content and a smooth online enrollment process ensures that once parents do find you, they're met with a compelling and seamless journey from discovery to enrollment.
By implanting these preschool advertising ideas into your marketing strategy for preschool, you position your school at the forefront of an increasingly digital world, ready to engage the next generation of learners and their families.

Jon Sundell began performing and recording folk music, mostly for adults, in the 1960's, in his high school and college years, in New York, Michigan and western Europe. He began working with children in 1971, when he served as a camp music director, then, after moving south to east Tennessee, performed in a 4-room country schoolhouse. From that start till 1984 Jon's school programs - in the southeast, mid-west, and New England - focused on folklore, presented through songs, tales and singing games, and demonstrating various stringed instruments. During that early period Jon earned a MS in Education with an emphasis on Appalachian Studies, which enabled him to enrich his school programs.
Tumblr media
After completing a Master of Library Science degree in 1984, Jon began working as a public library children's specialist in Forsyth County, North Carolina, incorporating many multicultural themes into his preschool and school- aged storytimes. As Jon became head of Children's Outreach, then Hispanic Services in the 1990's, he learned Spanish and started developing bilingual and Spanish language programs. He used them not only locally, but on many trips to Mexico, Central and South America, mostly during vacations.
In 2006, Jon moved from the public library to public schools, where his programs for elementary grades incorporated nearly all the other themes you see in his offerings. He developed a good knowledge of the school curriculum and often prepared programs in coordination with classroom teachers, particularly in Social Studies and Language Arts.
Tumblr media
When Jon retired from librarianship in 2016, he formed the company, "Perfect Storm Edu-tainment," utlilizing his combined experiences as a performer, teacher, and librarian to present programs that support and enhance school curriculum and motivate children to read. In this endeavor, he is utilizing a lot of material that he developed in his library work, but often scaled up for larger audiences.

Embracing Our Calling: A New Perspective on Fundraising and Outreach
I love the work God has called me to do. While there are days when the kids drive me up the wall, the joy and love that come from caring for hurting hearts often leave me with a joy that’s impossible to explain. (Although, at this moment, with two preschool-aged boys going crazy, that feeling hasn’t quite come through yet today). We are all in on Kids Cove. My wife is working full-time to help…

Is Running a Preschool Profitable?
Tumblr media
A Look Beyond the Playtime
The idea of running a preschool might seem idyllic: surrounded by giggling children, fostering young minds, and making a difference. However, the reality of running a preschool is far more complex. While the potential for reward is high, so is the risk. So, is running a preschool a profitable venture?
Factors Influencing Preschool Profitability:
Location: Urban centers with high demand for childcare tend to have higher tuition rates, leading to greater potential profit. However, rent and operating costs in these areas also tend to be higher.
Curriculum and Services: Offering specialized programs, unique learning approaches, or additional services like extended care can justify higher tuition fees and increase profitability.
Marketing and Outreach: Effectively reaching potential families and building a strong reputation are crucial for filling enrollment slots.
Operational Efficiency: Tightly managing expenses, utilizing resources wisely, and maintaining a streamlined operation can significantly impact profitability.
Government Funding and Grants: Some preschools qualify for government funding or grants, which can significantly contribute to financial stability.
Competition: The number of existing preschools in the area and their offerings greatly influence pricing power and overall profitability.
Challenges of Running a Profitable Preschool:
Low Profit Margins: The childcare industry is known for its low profit margins, especially for small, independent preschools.
High Overhead Costs: Staff salaries, rent, utilities, insurance, and materials are significant expenses that must be carefully managed.
Regulatory Compliance: Meeting licensing requirements and maintaining safety standards are essential, but also add to operational costs.
Attrition Rate: Enrollment fluctuations due to families moving, changing their needs, or graduating to kindergarten can impact revenue streams.
Intense Competition: Attracting and retaining students in a competitive market requires constant effort and innovation.
Potential Rewards of Running a Preschool:
Making a Difference: Watching children learn, grow, and develop under your guidance is a deeply rewarding experience.
Flexibility and Autonomy: Owning a preschool can offer flexibility in schedule and greater control over curriculum and operations.
Community Building: Building a strong community of families and educators can be personally fulfilling.
Long-Term Investment: Investing time and effort in establishing a successful preschool can lead to a valuable asset for the future.
Tips for Increasing Preschool Profitability:
Focus on Quality: Provide exceptional care and education to attract and retain families.
Offer Unique Programs: Differentiate your preschool with specialized programs or unique learning approaches.
Manage Finances Carefully: Track expenses, negotiate good deals, and utilize resources efficiently.
Build a Strong Reputation: Invest in marketing and outreach to build a strong community presence.
Explore Funding Options: Research available government funding and grants.
Seek Mentorship and Support: Connect with other preschool owners for advice and guidance.
Ultimately, running a successful and profitable preschool requires a combination of passion, business acumen, and a genuine commitment to providing high-quality childcare.  While the road can be challenging, the potential rewards make it a fulfilling and impactful career path.
